What are the Most Controversial Hallmark Christmas Movies?

Every year since its inception in 1983, the Hallmark Channel has been synonymous with Christmas. For many, myself included, turning on the Hallmark Channel signals the official start of the holiday season. From romantic comedies to feel-good family dramas, Hallmark Christmas movies have something for everyone.

But not all of their films have been well-received. In fact, some have been quite controversial. Here are a few of the most controversial Hallmark Christmas movies:

The Christmas Note (2015)
The Christmas Note tells the story of two estranged sisters who reconnect after their mother’s death. One sister, played by Reagan Pasternak, is a successful business consultant who is always on the go and has no time for love or anything else for that matter. The other sister, played by Meghan Ory, is a stay-at-home mom with two kids who seems to have it all together. But when their mother dies suddenly, the two sisters are forced to put aside their differences and come together to plan her funeral. While doing so, they discover a previously unknown niece whom they must care for in their mother’s absence.
While The Christmas Note was praised for its heartwarming story and great acting, some viewers took issue with its portrayal of working mothers. In particular, they felt that the film perpetuated the stereotype that working mothers are cold and heartless while stay-at-home moms are kind and nurturing.

Dashing Through the Snow (2015)
Dashing Through the Snow tells the story of Ashley Parker (played by Ona Grauer), a workaholic executive who is forced to team up with her estranged father (played by Paul Greene) on a cross-country road trip to save her job. Along the way, they learn a lot about each other and themselves as they reconnect and Ashley finally learns to slow down and enjoy life.
While Dashing Through the Snow was praised for its charming story and great acting, some viewers took issue with its portrayal of men. In particular, they felt that it perpetuated the stereotype that men are bumbling idiots who cannot be trusted to do anything right while women are competent and capable of doing everything themselves.

The Nine Lives of Christmas (2014)
The Nine Lives of Christmas tells the story of Zachary Gray (played by Brandon Routh), a confirmed bachelor who falls in love with Marilee Michaels (played by Kimberly Sustad), a woman who has just inherited eight cats from her Aunt Bitsy. When Marilee starts talking about getting married and having children, Zachary begins to feel like he’s being pushed out of her life so he does what any sane person would do in this situation: he buys her a cat in an attempt to get her to change her mind about marriage and children.
While The Nine Lives of Christmas was praised for its funny story and great acting, some viewers took issue with its portrayal of relationships. In particular, they felt that it perpetuated the stereotype that women only want relationships with men who can give them what they want materially instead of taking them for who they are as individuals.
